Karen Mensah, a Trader at Makola.

Karen, a middle aged woman and mother of two children lives at old Dansoman. She is into the sale of second-hand shoes and bags at the Makola Market, opposite Rawlings Park.

She began her business with the importation of ladies shoes and bags about five years ago in a very small shop at Makola. The major problem with my business as at the beginning had to do with the fact that I could not meet the demands from my clients after two years of operations, she stressed, but currently I am able to meet the demand because I have been able to expand my business.

The transformation of her business began after she had been introduced to one Field Officer of Adehyeman Savings and Loans from the Makola Branch. She started with Adehyeman Savings and Loans as a regular depositor. She operated the Odehyee Saver Account for some time until she saw the need to apply for a loan from Adehyeman.

She took her first loan of GHC7, 000 in June, 2007 to stock her shop so as to be able to meet the constantly increasing demand from her growing clientele. ‘With careful planning and the right kind of financial advice from my loan officer I secured the needed stock to meet the demand from my clients” she says.

After being able to access this amount of loan from Adehyeman, she now tells her friends in the business how easy it is to get financial support from a company that partners people in their business and contributes to the business growth.

She is excited by the fact that after getting this kind of financial support from Adehyeman, her business has grown and she now travels to Bangkok and other parts of Asia to buy her wares.

She has currently grown her business from being a purely retailing outlet to a wholesaler.

“I have been able to double my sales because of the kind of support I have enjoyed from my bankers (Adehyeman)” she states. She now deals with a lot more suppliers.

Today she can comfortably say that her business has expanded, she currently has new outlets in Okaishie and Tema bringing the total number of Shops she owns to three (3). She also hopes to open one more shop before the end of 2010.

Today she operates a RoyalFlex Account (Current Account) and has strong intensions of starting a long savings plan by signing onto the RoyalPlus Accounts (Fixed Deposit).
